Typewritten carbon copy of Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Fine Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, May 1, 1952. One box of text, one box of illustrations of text, eight boxes of photographs, the older ones from Boston Public Library photographs, the 1940's and early 1950's photographs taken by Bainbridge Bunting. A detailed appendix contains a street by street listing of Back Bay houses, with dates of construction, and names of architects, builders, and original owners, where they can be ascertained.

Bainbridge Bunting was born in Kansas City, Missouri on November 23, 1913. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University. In 1948, he joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico Art Department, where he remained until his retirement in 1979. Bunting immersed himself in the local culture, and began an important study of adobe architecture. He authored numerous articles and three books on the architecture of New Mexico.
